Job Summary
A member of the Executive Management team, reporting to the President of the Company, the Director – R&D Software Development provides leadership, direction and oversight in the development and maintenance of the company’s software products. The Director works closely with internal managers and customers to analyze requirements, develop products and insure quality roll-outs while managing a team of experienced software programmers and quality assurance staff.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
• Function as a key participant in the company’s Executive Management team.
• Oversee the design, development, enhancement, and maintenance of the company’s software products.

• Effectively hire, train and manage a team of highly motivated software programmers, quality assurance staff and internal network engineers, driving them to successfully deliver innovative products and services.

• Total responsibility for the outsourcing of company programming and QA done off-shore.

• Maintain hands-on proficiency in the use of the company’s software products from an end-user point of view.

• Become knowledgeable of competitive offerings and their use of technology so as to continually enhance and differentiate the company’s products.

• Maintains knowledge of emerging technological trends and utilizes this knowledge to educate the staff and the company on opportunities to build better products and drive business decisions.

• Assists with proactively supporting client service by providing technical back-up to the Operations and Sales departments.

• Actively participate in President’s Council (group of client application advisors) and client conference sessions as the technology “owner” of the company’s products.

• Maintain and expand the Technology Council (group of client technology advisors) as a way to communicate the company’s use of technology while better understanding the technology needs of the customers.

• Prepares project plans for budgetary approval, actively participate in the preparation of the company’s annual budget.

• Ensures that all team members have the tools and training required to perform effectively.

• Manage the Microsoft Gold Partner relationship, ensure the annual renewal.

• Manage the overall Richardson, TX office and all company assets.

• Assume additional responsibilities as assigned.

Required Experience & Qualifications

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate and persuade at all management levels, both inside and outside the department, and thrive in a cross-functional environment.

• Knowledge of the company’s business practices and direction, including strong understanding of the products and customers.

• Strong knowledge of financial management systems and the accounting process.

• Adaptable, self-starter, team player, customer focused, and results oriented.

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively and independently in atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, and deadline pressure; must able to define problems and create solutions.

• Thorough knowledge of software development methodologies.

• Ability to balance the long-term ("big picture") and short-term implications of individual decisions.

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and conceptual skills.

• Ability to work effectively with both users and technical staff in team-oriented environments.

• Good oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical personnel.

Technical skills:
• This position is a hand’s on management role requiring expertise in software coding.

• Knowledge of fundamental legal information system requirements.

• Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft operating systems, servers, and database systems.

• Good knowledge of Microsoft networking concepts and common infrastructure.

• Good knowledge of server hardware, server storage and other infrastructure, client/server and web based applications, and server utilities.

• 5+ years of hands-on experience with VB.NET and ASP.NET

• 5+ years of hands-on work experience with Microsoft SQL Server (2005/2008) with strong SQL and Database Design skills

• Expertise with other platforms including SharePoint, XML, HTML, JavaScript, VBScript

Minimum Education:
• Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related field

Experience:
• Minimum 10 years of software programming experience

• Minimum 5 years management experience

• Experience within the Legal market a plus

• Experience with accounting software a plus
